Responsibility is the obligation to perform a task. Thus, a person assigned a task is responsible for its completion; if this does not happen, a manager is likely to penalize the person in some way for having failed. For example, a staff person is assigned responsibility for completing the repairs on production equipment by the end of the shift. Similarly, a school bus driver is responsible for completing his route by the start of the school day. Or, a sales manager is responsible for achieving a targeted revenue goal for a specific sales region.
