Leave of absence

A leave of absence is a period of time for which an employee has permission not to be at work. This situation is considered exceptional, requiring the special permission of the employer. Thus, a vacation or holiday is not a leave of absence. During the leave period, the employee may be paid or unpaid, depending on the arrangement with the employer. For example, an employee requests a three-month leave of absence to care for a sick parent.
