A garnishment is a legal authorization to seize the personal property of a debtor that is in the possession of a third party. Garnishments frequently involve court orders to employers to retain the wages of their employees to pay for child support, unpaid taxes, and unpaid debts. Employers are then required to remit these retained wages to the applicable court or creditor.
