EDGAR is an electronic filing system that is used by publicly held companies to submit their periodic filings to the Securities and Exchange Commission (SEC). The term is a contraction of Electronic Data Gathering, Analysis and Retrieval. The filings submitted through the EDGAR system are then made available to the general public, who can peruse the SEC database for filings. Nearly all filings made by public companies are submitted through the EDGAR system.
