SWIFT stands for The Society for Worldwide Interbank Financial Telecommunication (SWIFT). It operates a worldwide network that banks use to exchange standardized electronic messages. These messages are known as SWIFT MT codes. The SWIFT network transports messages between parties - it does not provide a clearing or settlement service.

SWIFT is a member-owned entity that was founded in 1977.
