A trade date is the date on which an order related to a security is executed in the market. This transaction can relate to the purchase or sale of a security. The trade date concept applies to all types of securities, such as:
- Common stock
- Foreign exchange instruments
- Preferred stock
When an order is placed very late in a trading day, execution may be delayed to the next day; this means that the trade date is the following business day.
The trade date is either earlier than or the same as the transaction payment date.
