Personnel refers to the employees of an organization as a group or sub-group. For example, those employees working in the engineering area could be referred to as engineering personnel. The term is sometimes more tightly defined to only include the administrative staff of an entity, excluding the production component of a business. The term does not include the former employees of a business, such as retirees. Instead, the focus is on those employees currently working on behalf of the organization.

The term can also refer to the human resources department, specifically that portion of the department that deals directly with employee issues, such as interviews, performance reviews, and exit interviews, as well as employee record keeping.
