Worthless securities

Worthless securities have no market value. The owner of a worthless security can claim a loss on these securities when filing an income tax return. Securities must normally be sold before a loss can be claimed on them. In the case of worthless securities, they can be treated as though they had been sold as of the last day of the year.

Stocks, stock rights, and bonds can all be classified as worthless securities.
