Registered security

A registered security is a debt or equity issuance that has been registered with the relevant regulatory commission for sale by the issuer. In the United States, a security is registered with the Securities and Exchange Commission. The term also refers to a security for which the owner's name has been registered with the issuing entity or its agent; this usually means that the owner's name is listed in a database along with the unique identifying number of the relevant security.
