Forgery is the act of improving one's financial position by creating a fake legal document or altering an existing one. Doing so is typically at the expense of another party. Forgery also encompasses the production of fake items in order to pass them off as being of value; examples are forged paintings, sculptures, and other types of artwork. Forgery is a criminal offense.

The creation of a copy is not considered forgery, unless it is then misrepresented to a third party.
